Perhaps the most important fashion event in the US, the Met Gala promises big designers, even bigger boldface names and the most adventurous and epic ensembles of the year. Industry heavyweights have been obsessively mulling over how to best approach this year’s theme—China: Through The Looking Glass—since it was announced.
The best red carpet moments from the #MetGala are handpicked for you right here:
Those experimenting with Chinese structure did so mostly in shades of crimson, including Amal Alamuddin Clooney, who wore an elaborate Maison Margiela gown by John Galliano. Other adherents to the red state were Jessica Hart, Reese Witherspoon, Helen Mirren, Gigi Hadid, and Banks. Another hit in the rouge department was Rita Ora, who strutted by with Tom Ford in a style similar to his creations in the exhibit.
Whether satin and strapless or in laser-cut leather, never underestimate the power of the black dress. Every stylish woman knows that the black dress works for any occasion that calls for chic. Our favourite look was the one of fashion duo Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen as they took Met Gala by storm in stunning black ensembles. Mary-Kate wore an elegant robe-inspired gown for fashion’s biggest night while Ashley sported a delicate chiffon dress which featured tiered ruffles, a plunging neckline and a dramatic train.
There’s been surely a white-out on the red carpet. A lot of celebrities chose white as their shade of choice, from creamy tuxedo suits, to a lace white gown. Selena Gomez looked absolutely stunning in her sexy chic white ensemble. We would be lying if we tried to say this wasn’t one of our favourite Met Gala looks ever. From the slinky silhouette, (and the way it hugged her curves!), to the flowers in her hair and the bold red lip, she totally honored the theme in a tasteful, (and totally chic), way. The silk white Vera Wang gown looked like it was made for her. The dress featured a white bandeau that showed ample cleavage and a plunging silk v-neckline draped over it — but that’s not all!
Having trouble getting the attention you want? A striking sparkly dress will help you out. Take a lesson from Kendal Jenner. This full sequins, body-hugging gown from Calvin Klein probably contributed another 10,000 Instagram followers in the last hour.
A fitting finale for the evening—or so most thought before Beyoncé and Jay Z made a surprise last-minute entrance—was Rihanna in a gigantic yellow robe by the Chinese couturier Guo Pei. Clutched sumptuously to her bosom, it was the epitome of languor and luxury—two concepts absolutely integral to chinoiserie.
